An almond, in a walnut,
With a lateral nucleus for
Fear conditioning
And a central nucleus for
Fight or flight.
A walnut that can dream,
Plus an almond of fear,
The consciousness of the soul,
Creativity is here.

a walrus can dream an almond can fear….ha…love those last two lines as well…a walnut does look a bit brainy….but your walrus stole the show for me…smiles.

I love almonds but I never thought of is as imaginative until now. Great piece, Polly!

25/01/2013 at 00:58
Man that is deep, or I’m too tired to understand it. Either is possible!
25/01/2013 at 01:25
Probably both, dear Joe. It is late

In a nutshell… So what do pistachios think?
25/01/2013 at 01:19
I’ve often wondered that myself … quite mysterious in a green sort of way, I find, those pistachios

I’m not a big nut-lover – so to speak! Though do like walnut whips if I can leave the nut… that defeats the point I guess….
25/01/2013 at 18:23
You might not remember, but walnut whips used to have a walnut inside the creme sitting on the base ~ my dad always said it was there to taunt those who hated walnuts and thought they’d got rid of the one on the top
25/01/2013 at 01:20
Funny! I thought I commented on this earlier. Very interesting piece.
25/01/2013 at 01:28
You did! For some inexplicable reason WordPress is asking me to approve your comments ~ don’t know why, I’ve not changed my settings … very strange.

The cerebellum and the amygdala. The nutty material that is us — Hannibal Lecter’s delight.
Very fun poem.

Many thanks Nico
25/01/2013 at 03:41
You’ve got to be a bit nutty to create me thinks… cool poem!
25/01/2013 at 07:55
As in ‘you don’t have to be made to work here but it helps’
25/01/2013 at 08:25
…so true….now if one adds some fruit, would that aid in the creativity?
25/01/2013 at 08:26
Assuredly! Everyone’s a fruit and nutcase
25/01/2013 at 15:38
fantastic.

I so see the brain as a walnut. I believe the creator… whatever entity or process that is for you… reuses forms and shapes that work well. We see examples of this everywhere in nature. This is a nice, tight write.
25/01/2013 at 19:36
Thanks Kim ~ I too think that’s what we do when we write
25/01/2013 at 20:15
Does this mean that Brazil nuts write in Portuguese? Loved the metaphor – it’s so visual. Yet another person whose thought processes have me thinking, “Now why didn’t I think of that?”
25/01/2013 at 21:25
How delicious to think that Brazil nuts write in Portuguese
and Monkey nuts write in gibberish, I guess heh-heh
25/01/2013 at 21:33
Nah – give them long enough and they’ll come up with the Complete Works of Shakespeare – or perhaps, on Burns Night, I should say Robert Burns
25/01/2013 at 21:36
That would fit with the good dr’s hypothesis
25/01/2013 at 22:55
I’d give an almond a leg to write this well.
25/01/2013 at 23:38
heh-heh ‘an almond a leg’ heh-heh, you are a card

Lovely metaphor – apparently cyanide has a smell of almonds
27/01/2013 at 08:32
Ah … I remember this from my days of reading Agatha Christie … hmmm …
