Frowsty ferns and frosted hay,
Hints of darkening damp decay,
Dank smouldering fires,
Smokey blue Shires.
A dog’s yap ricochets
Across archaic
Byways.
Buzzards ride, sway,
Swoop on small prey.

With Elgar’s discern-
ing ear.
